Wedding Wednesday: The Beckner Wedding

The Beckner Wedding | June 9, 2018 | Photography by Pat Cori Photography

Carley Edwards and Chris Beckner had known each other for years since their brothers became friends in middle school. They would often see each other at their brothers’ games and school activities, but it wasn’t until years later when they met for coffee to talk about work that the sparks started to fly.

It was a typical Sunday in November at lunch after church when Chris told Carley they needed to leave by 3:30 to get ready for pizza at his grandma’s that night. So at 3:30 when they started packing up, he slipped her an envelope that said “scavenger hunt.” Inside was a note with hints to find each destination, and instructions to take a picture at each location before moving on. The clues ending up leading them to three spots around Roanoke that were significant to them, with the final spot being the Roanoke Mountain Overlook, the place Chris had first told Carley he loved her. Once they were there, the couple walked around and talked for a bit until Chris took out the notes he’d written, which ended in asking Carley to marry him. Carley’s first reaction was, “Are you sure?!”

She’s very glad he was sure.

The wedding had a tropical theme since it was in June, Carley loves pineapples, and Chris lived in the Caribbean for a while, so it seemed like the perfect fit. Green was the color palette for the wedding party, but they let everyone choose what to wear. No one matched exactly, but it ended up working perfectly. The florist included pops of orange and yellow to go along with the tropical theme and the centerpieces were cored-out pineapples with flowers inside. And rather than a traditional cake, the couple opted for a stack of pancakes instead to celebrate the night of their first date, which they ended at Denny’s.

It was the ceremony that the couple looks back on most fondly. After months of anticipation, Carley remembers being so happy to stand hand-in-hand with her best friend, in the sanctuary she grew up in, surrounded by everyone they love and in front of a cross the represented why they were there in the first place. Chris’s favorite memory is the prelude to the ceremony and the overwhelming sense that God had orchestrated everything to get them to that point.
