Wedding Wednesday: The Yunger Wedding

The Yunger Wedding | September 1, 2018 | Photography by Jordan Baker Photography

Kitty Schaffernoth and CJ Yunger met at Virginia Tech when they both joined the Quidditch team. She was a Beater; he was a Seeker. Their relationship quickly transformed from teammates to friends to something more.

Kitty recalls having a wonderful and transformative experience in Olympic National park in August of 2011, and she’s had a special attachment to Lake Crescent ever since. It’s a gorgeous glacial lake with crystal clear water and it’s surrounded by evergreen trees. Over the years of their relationship, Kitty and CJ had visited the park and camped on the shores of the lake several times. It was also the place Kitty told CJ she loved him for the first time. It was in August of 2017 when the two were on a camping trip, that CJ proposed at sunrise on the shores of the lake that held such a special place in Kitty’s heart.

The couple now lives in Portland, OR, but it was important to them to have their wedding in Roanoke. They chose The Glen for their venue based on its stunning views of the blue ridge mountains. The ceremony was officiated by Karen Osborne who created a beautiful and heartfelt custom ceremony for the couple that highlighted their love of travel, adventure, and the earth. CJ’s sister read a poem she wrote during the ceremony that melted everyone’s hearts. To symbolize their union, Kitty and CJ did a quilt wrapping ceremony. Kitty is a quilter and asked their friends and family to send pieces of fabric for her to use, which everyone later signed as their guest book. The ceremony represented the love of their family and friends supporting the couple as they entered into marriage. It was a favorite moment of both the couple and the guests.

Kitty doesn’t have a favorite memory of her special day; she has many snapshots that stand out, like dancing to “Walkin’ on Sunshine” with her dad, singing along to Coldplay’s “Til Kingdom Come” as she and CJ had their first dance, talking to family members she hadn’t seen in years, or when she and CJ were so hungry for cake that they completely forgot to feed each other a piece first. The one moment that stands out above all others, however, was a quiet one. Kitty was tucked in the back room, waiting to walk down the aisle, and listening to the processional music and watching her bridesmaids walk out, when she suddenly felt the weight of the day and the adventures to come. She remembers tearing up and holding her bouquet close, breathing in the smells and the sounds and thinking to herself, “Remember this moment. Remember these feelings. This day will go by so fast, but hold onto this.”
