Wedding Wednesday: The Hilbert Wedding

The Hilbert Wedding | December 2, 2017 | Photography by: Pat Cori Photography

Emily Allen met Daniel "Danny" Hilbert a few years after she moved from Florida to Virginia. A mutual friend introduced them, and Danny took Emily's phone number. After he didn't call, two months later the two ran into each other at a Halloween party, and their instant attraction showed Danny that he had dropped the ball in not reaching out to Emily. Naturally, he didn't drop the ball again! Danny had originally planned to propose to Emily at her favorite restaurant in Tampa, but the plan went awry when she got sick earlier in the week, then making Danny sick as well. He was not to be deterred from proposing, however: he ended up proposing to her on a Friday morning before work with a beautiful ring.

Since middle school, Emily knew that she wanted a Christmas wedding, so in a magical ceremony with classical music provided by the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and adorned with subtle Christmas touches to the decor, Emily achieved her perfect day. The reception had several meaningful moments, such as the "grandmother's dance." Both Emily and Danny were blessed to have both of their grandmothers present to help them celebrate their union. Emily's birthday happened to be that same day, so during the reception everyone serenaded her with a rendition of "Happy Birthday." While the couple was sitting at the reception with their champagne, in the presence of their loved ones, Emily says that she was struck by the thought that weddings are "really about friends and family and blending families together, and that was a great moment for me."

Wedding Wednesday: The Conley Wedding

Matt & Megan Conley | August 9, 2014 | Photography by Kimberley Izatt Photography

Megan and Matt didn't mind when friends blatantly set them up one evening in college. Their friends left them alone together for most of the evening, which resulted in the two talking for hours and then going on a date a week later. That date led them to Christmas day in 2013 when Matt talked Megan into going to The Roanoke Star before their drive back home after spending the holiday with her parents. A longstanding game of "how much do you love me?" set Matt up for the perfect proposal. As usual, Megan answered "more than anything," which Matt countered with "do you love me enough to marry me?" Unaware that this was not just their usual game, Megan turned to see Matt on one knee with ring box in hand when he asked one last time "Megan Grace Dudley, will you marry me?" Megan's navy blue, yellow, and white wedding was truly a family affair. The wedding décor came together with many DIYs and help from family members. Megan's aunt made a quilt using the color scheme of the wedding, and guests signed it for the couple to cherish and use every day. With the help of her dad, Megan re-purposed old doors and turned them into a chalkboard bar menu and thank you note to the guests. Matt also helped her create picture frames out of old windows to hang behind the sweetheart table and throughout the reception. Megan's parents and aunts also created a last minute piece of art when the ceremony had to move inside due to rain. Because the arbor they originally planned to use was soaked, Megan's family rented a different one early that morning and decorated it with flowers, fabric, and lights to create a beautiful focal point for the ceremony. Many family members also contributed to the centerpieces by giving Mason jars, cutting wood slices, picking flowers, and tying ribbons. Megan believes all this love and help from family and friends is what truly made her wedding unique. Her favorite memory of the day, though, was the ceremony and all its special elements such as walking down the aisle, saying the vows, exchanging rings, and finally becoming husband and wife.
