Wedding Wednesday: The Hale Wedding

The Hale Wedding | September 16, 2017 | Photography by: Anna Bowser Photography

When Lauren Boitnott bumped into Rob Hale at a weekly bingo night, she was a sophomore at Virginia Tech. Rob, a recent graduate, asked her for her number, and their story begins with her entering "Lauren Bingo Girl" into his phone. During Lauren's senior year, she took a job in New York. Before she left Blacksburg and Rob behind, she gave him a little notebook in which to record his thoughts and precious moments while they were apart. A year later, the couple was on vacation in Savannah, and when they arrived for the dinner reservation that Rob had made, they were told that their table wasn't ready. Awaiting their table, the couple wandered the park across the street. There, Rob pulled out his notebook, which Lauren had never opened. When he opened it, Lauren saw an engagement ring sitting within a cut out section of pages. Lauren says she was "speechless," and when they returned to the restaurant for dinner, they were greeted with her closest friends, ready to celebrate the happy occasion.

Rob had once told Lauren that "he couldn't give away all his cards at once," so on their wedding day, Lauren gave him an incomplete deck of cards. As each of her bridesmaids walked down the aisle, they handed Rob cards to complete the deck, finishing up with Lauren's ace of hearts. To pay homage to the place that they met, the couple incorporated bingo into their minimal, classic reception and chose to forgo a guest book for "advice cards." Prompts for these included, "What should we name our kids and why?" and "Write us a haiku!" The beauty of the celebration was thanks in part to Lauren's aunt, who literally climbed a mountain to put together the beautiful and unique floral arrangements. The guests went home with custom Sharkey's glasses as another nod to Virginia Tech, rounding out Lauren and Rob's one-of-a-kind celebration.

Wedding Wednesday: The Kaylor Wedding

John & Wendy Kaylor | October 26, 2013 Photography by Maya McMahon Photography

Wendy and John's love story all began with a "wink" on Match.com. What was supposed to be a quick dinner turned into an evening out together, talking until 3 AM in the parking lot. When the couple went on a cruise to the Grand Caymans and Cozumel, she noticed John acting a little strange on their second night together. As they waited in the atrium for dinner, John complimented Wendy on her fancy dress and jewelry, but said one thing was missing. John got down on one knee to propose and the cruise guests quickly caught on to congratulate and make them feel like celebrities for the rest of the trip. Wendy says she has many favorite moments from her wedding, but one important memory was dancing with her grandfather, who used to get her to do things around the house as a child by promising he'd dance with her at her wedding. John's favorite memory was arranging for a vintage fire truck to take them from church to reception; as they rode through Grandin, people clapped and congratulated them! Wendy loved how their special day was a reflection of them as a couple. Their first look took place at the old downtown fire station. They also tied a literal fisherman's knot during their ceremony. Colors of navy and ivory had fall accent colors, with Boxwood centerpieces with lanterns in the middle. Wendy grew up making apple butter, so they made an extra batch that fall to pass out to guests for favors. John's uncle provided his band for entertainment and guests enjoyed a buffet of homestyle food. The bride's sister also surprised them by filling John's car with orange balloons that released as they departed. The happy newlyweds took a cruise out of Charleston to the Bahamas for their honeymoon.
