Wedding Wednesday: The Powell Wedding

Robert & Ashley Powell | May 24, 2014 | Photography by Katelyn James Photography

From high school to college sweethearts, Ashley and Robert have been somewhat inseparable since meeting in middle school. They attended their senior prom together and also started and graduated college together at Virginia Tech. Robert felt nervous about devising the perfect surprise for Ashley as a proposal since they'd been dating for five years. He decided the right time was during a weekend trip to North Carolina that she suggested and planned, so she wouldn't suspect a thing. He quickly jumped into action asking for her parents' permission before the trip and making a plan for the big moment. After having dinner at one of their favorite restaurants, Robert suggested an impromptu photo shoot in the Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden nearby. After taking a few photos and reassuring her the blinking light just meant the camera was broken and not in video mode, Robert faced Ashley toward him as he got on one knee. Ashley chose an elegant romantic theme with Charleston, South Carolina charm for the wedding, which was set with the incorporation of the bouquets and flower arrangements that were exactly what she envisioned! One of her other favorite aspects of the wedding was the first look. Being traditionalists, they were unsure about this element but it gave them special time to pray together and take photos alone and with their wedding party before the ceremony began. It was important to them that they have their ceremony inside a church as they both grew up attending church, and they were even able to have their pastor officiate. They also enjoyed dancing at the reception where they got to see all their friends and family members come together in one place to celebrate. One very unique element was the trolley that took guests through downtown Roanoke from one venue to another.

Wedding Wednesday: The Lawrence Wedding

Tyler & Amy Lawrence | May 3, 2013 | Photography by Katelyn James

Tyler and Amy met on their very first day of college as they took a class together. Eventually striking up a friendship, Tyler asked her to lunch one day and said after that day, he knew they had a connection. He wrote her a poem asking her to be his girlfriend and of course Amy said yes. On the night Tyler proposed, he fooled Amy into thinking she was headed to a girls' night out with her friends (Tyler was the college baseball team manager and said he'd be gone that day). Her roommates suggested they get dressed up and use a coupon for a nearby fancy restaurant. When they arrived, they were taken to a small room already decorated with flowers and candles - plus Tyler as he stood there with the ring. He read a poem much like when he'd asked her to be his girlfriend and once again, Amy said yes! Amy's favorite memory of their wedding day was the first dance, as her father playing Edwin McCain's "I'll Be" on the piano. Because Amy is an interior designer, she made several important wedding items. She and her mother made the wedding invitations along with a candy table with hand-stamped treat bags. Guests could also fill out advice cards and hang them on the advice tree (made by her florist). Purple was the main color theme, with accents of yellow and white, with flowers resembling freshly-picked wildflowers from a field. Centerpieces were small bundles of flowers in varying sizes of milk glass vases, which sat on silver trays with votive candles. Burlap and lace ribbon surrounded the marble, vanilla, chocolate, and raspberry cake; they also had a groom's cake (white cake with peanut butter filling) in the shape of a NY Yankees jersey. The happy couple celebrated their nuptials with a honeymoon trip to the Dominican Republic.
