Wedding Wednesday: The Hilbert Wedding

The Hilbert Wedding | December 2, 2017 | Photography by: Pat Cori Photography

Emily Allen met Daniel "Danny" Hilbert a few years after she moved from Florida to Virginia. A mutual friend introduced them, and Danny took Emily's phone number. After he didn't call, two months later the two ran into each other at a Halloween party, and their instant attraction showed Danny that he had dropped the ball in not reaching out to Emily. Naturally, he didn't drop the ball again! Danny had originally planned to propose to Emily at her favorite restaurant in Tampa, but the plan went awry when she got sick earlier in the week, then making Danny sick as well. He was not to be deterred from proposing, however: he ended up proposing to her on a Friday morning before work with a beautiful ring.

Since middle school, Emily knew that she wanted a Christmas wedding, so in a magical ceremony with classical music provided by the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra and adorned with subtle Christmas touches to the decor, Emily achieved her perfect day. The reception had several meaningful moments, such as the "grandmother's dance." Both Emily and Danny were blessed to have both of their grandmothers present to help them celebrate their union. Emily's birthday happened to be that same day, so during the reception everyone serenaded her with a rendition of "Happy Birthday." While the couple was sitting at the reception with their champagne, in the presence of their loved ones, Emily says that she was struck by the thought that weddings are "really about friends and family and blending families together, and that was a great moment for me."

Wedding Wednesday: The Baker Wedding

The Baker Wedding | June 17, 2017 | Photography by: Pat Cori Photography

Katie Hall's matron of honor had been telling Scott Baker about her for a while until he finally met her for himself at her matron of honor's bachelorette party, where he showed up with one of his friends. "I knew he was the one," Katie says, and the couple soon became inseparable. When Scott and Katie were visiting the idyllic Ocean Isle, NC for their annual vacation, the couple went out for dinner and then drove to the secluded Bird Island to watch the sunset. Walking on the beach with Scott, Katie turned to make her way back down a sand dune and found Scott down on one knee. "It was perfect!" Katie says.

For their special day, the couple really wanted to have a creative, one-of-a-kind ceremony. Katie, who says that she appreciates clean lines and artsy details, found that the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke was the perfect venue. To help create their dream wedding, Katie opted for a striped dress that made a bold statement, as well as a bouquet of king proteas that was as heavy as it was stunning, leaving Katie's arms sore the next day! Katie and Scott felt that the most important thing for their wedding was that the guests have fun, and so they incorporated elements such as a dance-friendly DJ, glowsticks for a fun and unique exit and  little bags of pretzels that each guest took home that read, "Thanks for helping us tie the knot!" The couple was excited to have a wedding that was different than other weddings that they'd been to. "We wanted to give our guests a fun experience that they'd never forget," Katie says. From the modern and creative venue to the dancing and glowsticks of the reception, Katie and Scott created the perfect event to start their lives together with their friends and family partaking in the festivities. "I feel so lucky to have such great people in our lives and that they took the time to come celebrate our big day!" Katie says.

Wedding Wednesday: The Fluker Wedding

The Fluker Wedding | April 26, 2016 | Photography by: Pat Cori Photography

Sarah White and Thomas "Ray" Fluker met in their early years, as students at Roanoke College. They had a class together, but didn't spend much time with one another during their time at school. Thanks to social media they were able to stay connected after gradution, and after ten years, two career changes, and a couple of gentle denials on Sarah's end, the two found themselves both in the same place at the same time. Back in Salem, the two of them got together for dinner at a Roanoke College staple, followed by a walk through campus, which landed the couple at a set of rocking chairs, where they sat and talked for hours. Ray and Sarah would revisit these rocking chairs when he asked her to spend the rest of her life with him, to the tune of "Question" by the Old 97.

The two wanted their wedding day to be romantic, classic, and fun. The event began with a beautiful ceremony at the Taubman, with rose petals lining the aisles. The ceremony paid tribute not only to their love, but also to Sarah's parents. Sarah wore a piece of her mother's wedding dress, sewn into her own, and she wore the pearls that her father had gifted her mother on their first wedding anniversary.

The reception was held on the roof of the Center in The Square, where they enjoyed each other, their friends, and their family, with a delightful variety of southern comfort food, such as chicken and waffles, mac and cheese, and lemonade. Sarah's and Ray's favorite part of the night was standing on that roof top surrounded by their friends and family.

Their wedding was a romantic celebration of love and friendship. The perfect evening, starting with a classic ceremony, and ending with a fun roof-top party with the perfect view to start the rest of their lives together. A view they can look back on for years to come. As a surprise for Sarah, Ray set up for a drone to capture video and photographs of the reception. This was a guest favorite, and sure to be a fun way to revisit their wedding in the years to come.
